Sèlanar — the Tongue and the Door

In Montavera, magic is not cast. It is sung, in a tongue where tone is tense: sing a word low and you speak of what is finished, and command it; sing it high and you speak of what is coming, and ask. Every thing has a true name, and a true name is a song. The books walk through that door. This page is how a newcomer learns to knock.

Start Here · The Primer

A Storyteller's Primer on Sèlanar

Màranven closes with a primer written for storytellers: the tongue's tones and how they bend meaning, the vowel hand and the hand signs, the doors and how they are asked after — everything a teller needs to put Sèlanar on the table, or on the page, and have it behave. The primer rides inside Book Three, and the reading edition of the book is free in the Library.

Màranven

The Tongue and the Door — the translator's book of the Sèlanar tongue: its grammar and its songs, its diagrams drawn the way the Bureau files them, and at the back, the five song sheets of the unicorns, printed for filing songs of your own. If the novels are where the tongue is spoken, this is where it is taught.

The Unicorns' Song Sheets

At the back of Màranven stand five pages: a song in Sèlanar, its translation facing it, the instructions — On Filing a Song, in five steps — and two blank sheets, one in each language, made to be photocopied and written on. Take the blanks here, or open the Song Sheet station, which is where the book's own QR code points.
